Laser Scar Removal — Restoration with removal!

Whether we like it or not, scarring is our body’s natural reaction to severe skin damage. It can come from anywhere, such as accidental incidents, a previous surgery, or even severe past acne. One thing that most of us can agree on, however, is that scarring is unwanted and can have an effect on our self-esteem. At Azul Aesthetics & Wellness Boutique in Syracuse, laser scar removal is a common treatment used to help you regain the smoother and healthy skin you desire in a safe, comfortable environment.

While we provide several options to help you achieve your appearance goals, many of our patients elect to receive Laser Scar Removal, which is a wonderful and easy way to minimize any unwanted scar tissue that you may have.

What is Laser Scar Removal?

Also referred to as Laser Scar Resurfacing or Laser Scar Revision, this treatment can help reduce the appearance of scarring, but can also help with wrinkles, dark spots, and skin lesions. This procedure can be effective with scar tissue even several years following its formation. There are two different options for laser treatment, CO2 Laser Therapy, and Fractional Laser Therapy.

CO2 Laser Therapy – This type of therapy uses either quick pulses of light or continuous light beams to remove the thin layers of skin creating very minimal damage to your surrounding skin. Due to the nature of the treatment and healing process, only a small amount of scar tissue is targeted during each treatment. This may require multiple visits if you have larger scars. The recovery time for this treatment can vary but requires about 2 weeks for the average patient.

Fractional Laser Therapy – Fractional therapy uses a multitude of narrow columns of light which will tighten the collagen in the scar. This treatment injures less of your skin, but because the laser is going deeper, there is the possibility of additional scarring and a longer recovery time. However, on average, our patients are looking at about a week’s recovery time.

It is important to remember that laser treatment won’t remove the scars completely, but lessen their appearance. What is technically happening is that you are replacing one scar with another one that is smaller and not as noticeable. Regardless of which technique you and your Doctor agree upon, you may require multiple treatments depending on the size and severity of your scar.

What to Expect on the day of Laser Scar Removal?

FSince Laser Scar Removal is a non-invasive procedure, you will be able to be treated at our boutique and leave on the same day. Before we begin, a local anesthetic will be applied to the treatment area, and you may be administered an oral sedative depending on the procedure. We will then use scientifically advanced tools that, depending on which treatment you are receiving, emit beams of light to either remove the scar tissue or poke holes in it. Either method stimulates the production of collagen and allows your body to create new, smoother skin.

TAfter your procedure, we will apply a bandage to the treated area and will advise you to leave it on for at least 24 hours to ensure proper healing. When you are able to remove the bandage, you should be cleaning and maintaining the area between 2 and 5 times a day with either a saline solution or a diluted vinegar solution. In addition to cleaning, you should also apply a healing ointment, such as Eucerin or Aquaphor, to assist in the healing process and get the best results possible. The main goal is to prevent any scabs from forming. The full healing cycle lasts typically between 5 and 21 days, depending on the treatment you’ve received. Once the area has been healed, there still may be some redness for as long as a few months. We do highly advise the regular use of sunscreen when spending time in the sun to prolong the effects of the laser treatment. There are also some possible, yet rare side-effects of using laser treatment, including:

  • Aggravating cold sores – If you do have a history of cold sores, laser treatments may aggravate them, especially if you’re being treated around your mouth. If you inform your doctor about any possible concerns, an antiviral medication can be administered to help avoid this.
  • Milia – Milia are small, white bumps that appear very similar to whiteheads. Although they are not a serious complication, they can be annoying or unsightly. They can usually be treated using gentle exfoliation with a warm washcloth, but if that doesn’t work, they can also be removed by one of our doctors.
  • Hyperpigmentation – For some patients, a darkening effect on their skin may appear following the treatment. This can easily be treated using a skin-lightening cream.

  • Is Laser Scar Removal painful?

Laser scar removal isn’t “painful” but can have a minimal stinging sensation, similar to being popped by a rubber band. Before your treatment, we can apply a topical numbing ointment to alleviate any potential pain, and in some cases, may provide you with an oral sedative.
  • Are the results permanent?

Yes, the results are permanent. The laser scar removal treatment doesn’t remove scars completely, but rather minimizes their visibility by creating a smaller scar, which in turn will eventually fade.
  • How many treatments does it take?

While on average, a patient may only need to receive one or two treatments to achieve minimal scar tissue visibility, the severity and size of your scar may require additional visits. Your doctor will be able to give you a more accurate estimate of the time frame after assessing the treatment area during your consultation, as well as the effect that the laser treatment has following your procedure.

What our clients and patients have to say:

“I am so thrilled with my lips! Dr. Lissa took her time and listened to me. This was my first experience with filler, and I was wanting a very conservative change. This is exactly what we achieved! I am very pleased with the final result and will be back for future visits!”
“Just left Dr. Diaz and was very impressed. Knowledgeable seems to have a great eye and actually talked me out of doing too much. I booked my next appointment for three months from now for my botox and filler. I’m so glad I found her.”
